Government spokesperson: The Ministry of Communications has applied twice to remove the Google Play filter, but the filtering working group has rejected it
According to Iran digital economy annotation, The government spokesperson announced that the Ministry of Communications has applied twice to remove the Google Play filter, but the filtering working group has rejected it.
“Ali Bahadori Jahromi”, the spokesperson of the government in his press conference today, stating that restriction or blocking is within the authority of the working group to determine examples of criminal content, said that the Ministry of Communications has requested a review from this working group in some cases.
According to him, the Ministry of Communications has requested to remove the Google Play filter twice, but the working group has not reached a conclusion.
Referring to the president’s order to review filtering, Jahromi stated that the National Center for Cyberspace has taken measures in this field, which should be put on the agenda of the Supreme Council of Cyberspace as soon as possible.
He called the government’s approach to increase the speed, quality and complete freedom of social networks and sites within the framework of the law and said that the government seeks to create the conditions for maximum benefit of the people from cyber space within the framework of the law.
The spokesperson of the government believes that people expect that when their rights are violated, whether in virtual or real space, the government and the sovereign will be able to claim their rights:
“The approach of this government is that where there is a violation of the law, the approach should be to correct the wrong procedure, not to block it. The same legal procedures common in the European and American communities should be applied to the announced foreign platforms. Correspondence has also been made so that there is a possibility of fulfilling people’s rights.”
It should be mentioned that Google Play, which is a place for safer downloading of Android applications, was also filtered last year along with the Instagram and WhatsApp filters. Since January 2022, the Ministry of Communications has repeatedly announced that it agrees to remove the Google Play filter, however, there has been no change in the situation.
“Eisa Zarepour” said in July of this year that the proposal to remove the Google Play filter was raised in the filtering working group, but it was not agreed upon.
