According to the CEO of the Information and Communication Technology Organization of Tehran Municipality, starting from the 1st of Mehr, 1402 (Iranian calendar), the “Shahrzad” application has been made available to citizens for metro and bus ticket services.
As reported by IDEA, Saeed Jahani, CEO of the Information and Communication Technology Organization of Tehran Municipality, during the unveiling event of the electronic wallet, mentioned the “Shahrzad” application: With the introduction of the electronic wallet, passengers can now top up their metro and BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) cards not only through traditional methods but also using their smartphones.
He added, “Metro and BRT passengers can, from the 1st of Mehr, use the ‘Shahrzad’ app to recharge their ticket cards on their smartphones. Additionally, passengers can enter metro and BRT stations by installing the ‘Shahrzad’ app and using QR codes.”
The CEO of the Information and Communication Technology Organization of Tehran Municipality explained, “By the end of the year, we plan to offer more services through the Shahrzad app, including services related to cultural centers, cinemas, taxis, private buses, and more.”
Jahani provided details on how to install this application and said, “Citizens can install this application on their mobile phones through the market and make payments for metro and BRT using their mobile phones.”
He also emphasized the importance of using electronic wallets, stating, “Utilizing electronic wallets is one of the key components of making Tehran a smarter city. While we had electronic wallets in Tehran before, their use was limited to paying certain fees and transportation-related matters. Our goal is to expand the use of electronic wallets in various aspects of citizens’ lives.
He added: In this regard, in the first phase, the use of electronic wallets for the metro and BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) has become possible. Until today, citizens used paper tickets and card tickets in the metro, but from today onwards, the electronic wallet, as a third option, facilitates citizens’ commutes.
He continued: Previously, to top up card tickets, citizens were required to pay 50,000 tomans, and if they had less usage, the remaining amount would stay in their accounts. However, with the use of this electronic wallet, citizens can also pay for taxi fares and, in the future, make purchases from fruit markets, cargo services, and citizen stores.
Furthermore, in the past, if you lost your metro card, the money inside the card was lost as well. But in the electronic wallet method, you can invalidate the card through the app and use the remaining balance, similar to bank accounts.
Shahrzad: More than Just Transportation
Jahani emphasized that the use of electronic wallets and the Shahrzad app is a significant step in making Tehran a smarter city. He said: In the first step, the metro and BRT buses will accept payments through electronic wallets, and in subsequent steps, sports facilities and cinema tickets will also be accessible through electronic wallets, and this process will undoubtedly continue.
Regarding access to this electronic wallet through the “MyTehran” platform, he added that the “MyTehran” app did not have the necessary capabilities to expand the software and provide services such as citizen wallets. Therefore, it was decided to introduce the electronic wallet system within the Shahrzad app.
