Among these, social hashtags took the lead, accounting for a substantial 51% of the overall hashtag usage.

Following social hashtags, general hashtags held a 31% share, while cultural hashtags made up 12% of the most frequently used Instagram hashtags among Iranian users in the first half of this year. Economic and political subjects also made appearances but occupied smaller proportions.
Social Hashtags Lead the Way
Within the category of social hashtags, “Fashion and Modeling” hashtags were the most prevalent, representing 33% of all social hashtags. These hashtags encompassed topics related to clothing, women’s fashion, style, coats, shirts, t-shirts, and more, underscoring the significance of fashion-related content on the platform.
The Fashion Frenzy
Additionally, the “Beauty and Health” subcategory within social hashtags contributed significantly, making up 23% of the social hashtag landscape. This category included discussions about beauty products, health tips, and self-care routines.
Regional Pride and Identity
Other topics had relatively smaller shares, with “Emotions and Feelings” ranking third at 10% of the frequently used social hashtags, followed by “Fantasy Products and Jewelry” at 6%.
Culture, Comedy, and More
In the social category, hashtags related to “Sports” and “Environment, Nature, and Tourism” held a 5% share, ranking fifth in terms of frequency.
Economic and Political Hashtags
In the general category, a noteworthy 56% of hashtags were associated with cities and countries. Tehran, Iran, Baluchistan, Isfahan, Shiraz, and others were among the cities frequently hashtagged, indicating regional pride and identity.
Political Engagement on Instagram
Within the general category, 36% of hashtags were directly related to Instagram itself, including popular hashtags like “Explore” and “Instagram.” The third most frequently used type of general hashtags pertained to content types, such as text, images, and news.
The Rich Tapestry of Instagram Hashtags in Iran
As previously mentioned, cultural hashtags ranked third in terms of frequency, making up 12% of all hashtags used by Iranian Instagram users. Within this category, hashtags related to “Comedy,” “Clips,” “Fun,” “Laughter,” and “Challenges” were the most commonly used, highlighting the platform’s appeal for humor and entertainment content. Music-related hashtags also played a significant role in the cultural category, with keywords like “Music,” “Song,” and “Musical” accounting for 26% of all cultural hashtags.
A Comparative Analysis of Their Presence
Art-related hashtags (14%), visual arts (13%), religious and spiritual (8%), literature and books (4%), and cinema, theater, and television (2%) rounded out the other frequently used hashtags in the cultural category.
Political Engagement on Instagram
It’s worth noting that economic and political hashtags occupied smaller proportions compared to other categories in the first half of 1402. In the economic category, 64% of hashtags were related to businesses, using keywords such as “Online Shop,” “Online Store,” “Wholesale,” “Wholesale Trade,” “Original,” and “Brand.” The remaining 36% of economic hashtags were associated with topics like “Gold,” “Currency,” “Cars,” and “Real Estate.”
A Glimpse into Iranian Protests and Activism
Furthermore, political hashtags had the smallest presence, constituting only 1% of all hashtags. The majority of political hashtags were related to issues and events tied to protests in the country in the past year.
