The use of the TikTok application has become possible for Iranian users through the use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network), although the name of Iran is still not visible in the list of countries that can register with a mobile phone on this social network. Users can watch content on this application without registration or register via email.
According to IDEA, previously, Iranian users were using modified versions of this application. TikTok was also available in Iran alongside its Chinese version, DouYin, but the Chinese version does not support the Persian language and is only available in Chinese. The lifting of TikTok sanctions now places it alongside applications like Instagram, which is blocked in Iran, and there is potential for the growth of Persian content by users on this platform in the near future.
The TikTok application unilaterally blocked access for Iranian users on October 12, 2019, and in subsequent years, it was filtered by the Content Determination Workgroup. Therefore, until today, this application was not accessible to the general Iranian public, even with a VPN; however, it appears that the possibility of connecting to TikTok is now available.
With over 120 million users, the United States has the highest number of users on this platform. Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, and Russia follow with 109.9 million, 82.2 million, 57.5 million, and 54.9 million users, respectively. There is no available data on the number of Iranian users of this application to date.
TikTok is the most popular Gen Z app in the world, and according to a demographic chart published in 2023, the majority of active TikTok users are in the age range of 18 to 24, with 21.5% being women and 17.4% being men. The chart also shows that content creators aged 18 to 24, with over 50%, consider this platform to be their open field.
