The Ministry of Communications has announced that their internet speed is increasing by publishing the performance indicators of mobile operators in the “Netsanjplus” system. However, the examination of the period before the increase of prices in January 2023 shows that the average speed of Irancell and Hamrahe Aval has been decreasing.
According to Iran digital economy annotation, in December 2023, when mobile internet packages became 34% more expensive, the Ministry of Communications announced that the prices had been increased in exchange for commitments from the operators. One of these commitments was a 30% increase in average speed by the end of June 2024 and a 50% increase in average speed by the end of 2024.
Now, the Radio Communications Regulatory Organization has made the performance indicators of mobile operators available in the “Netsanjplus” system, which shows that the average speed of these operators has increased, but this increase is not without controversy.
This system has published the access speed of users under the title “The result of the access speed of users to the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation Internet”; But it is not clear exactly what Result means. In this section, the speed of Hamrahe Aval in the second half of November 2023 was recorded as 11.36 Mbps and this number for Irancell is 10.95 Mbps.
The Netsanjplus system shows that the speed has reached 13.56 Mbps for Hamrahe Aval and 12.36 Mbps for Irancell in the first half of May.
The changes in the speed of these two operators since the price increase shows that Irancell has been able to increase its speed by 13.49% based on the indicators of the Ministry of Communications, and Hamrahe Aval has increased its speed by 11.78% from January 2023 to the first half of May. register These two operators must increase this increase to 30% by June. But whether that happens or not, that’s not the whole story.
The reduced speed increases
The Ministry of Communications has not announced how “the result of the access speed of users to the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation Internet” was obtained. In addition, this question is also raised that despite the small number of 5G users in the country, whether the speed measurement of this generation is correct or not. But apart from all this, there is another issue.
By comparing the regulatory statistics in the fall of 2023 and a year before that, i.e. the fall of 2022, it is clear that the average speed of Irancell and Hamrahe Aval has decreased significantly during this one year.
The average speed of Hamrahe Aval has decreased by 39% in 4G and by 19% in 3G. Irancell has also decreased by 12% in 4G and more than 14% in 3G during this period.
This process shows that the average speed of mobile operators has been decreasing until shortly before the price increase, that is, in the fall of 2023. As a result, if the operators fulfill the commitment of increasing the speed by 30%, the speed situation in June this year will be even worse than the fall of 2022.
