The Surge in Active Users on Iranian Messaging Apps Amidst Local Support
According to officials in the field of communications and information technology, the number of active users on domestic messaging apps is notably high. In the past two weeks alone, one of these messaging platforms has seen an increase of one million daily active users, reaching a total of 16 million.
According to IDEA, As a response to restrictions placed on certain foreign messaging apps in recent years, many Iranian users have migrated to both domestic and alternative foreign platforms. Although the number of users on local messaging apps is not yet comparable to their foreign counterparts, these platforms have garnered significant popularity among some individuals who prefer native tools over foreign ones.
Government-backed Efforts Boost Local Messaging Platforms
In the past few years, the government has taken various measures to support local platforms and online businesses. These efforts include providing suitable bandwidth, reducing data consumption tariffs by a third, and offering free co-working spaces. Last year, a regulation was introduced to promote digital economy businesses, incorporating sections and good support for local platforms.
In this regard, the latest statistics, shared by Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, during a meeting with the Attorney General of the country, reveal the strong and positive reception of local messaging apps. He mentioned, “Fortunately, the use of these domestic social networks has been very good, and immediate reports indicate the society’s interest in these networks. In the past two weeks alone, one of these messaging apps has added one million daily active users, bringing the total to 16 million.”
It’s worth noting that the concept of daily active users can vary, but based on studies, tens of thousands of new users join these platforms daily, and it’s hoped that this trend will continue to expand, encompassing a wider portion of the population.
