The Minister of Communications has emphasized that until the quality and capabilities of domestically produced modems improve, the country’s needs can be met through imports.
According to Iran digital economy annotation, the Minister of Communications admitted that domestically produced modems are not capable of supporting the high speed of fiber optic internet.
“Mohammadhassan Shanehsazzadeh”, the chairman of the board of directors of the Shatel Group of Companies, recently complained in a conversation with Digiato about the low quality of one of the domestic modem production brands and said that there is a requirement to use these modems.
But now the Minister of Communications has reacted to these statements and by emphasizing the limited capabilities of domestic modems, he has confirmed that until the quality and capabilities of domestically produced modems improve, the country’s needs can be met through imports.
In response to Shafqna’s question, “Issa Zarepour” said: “The discussion he raised is about fiber optic modems, which have 400,000 to 500,000 subscribers.”
He added: “The issue raised by the manager of this operator is not general and it was his personal concern. On the other hand, internal production modems are not capable of high speeds.
Zarepour said: “Part of what this operator manager said is true; Because right now, external modems that work at 2.4 GHz frequency (which is the usual Wi-Fi frequency), cannot provide a speed of more than 100 Mbps.”
The Minister of Communications continued: “The 6.5 GHz frequency, which is the Wi-Fi 6 and 7 standard, can provide speeds of up to one gig. Currently, Wi-Fi 7 of the new standard can offer up to 10 gigs; But the modem must support this feature.
He explained: “Some modems produced inside do not support these frequencies, but now this issue is considered in the production plan of the company or the modem manufacturer. We must pay attention to domestic production, and the product that is produced must have quality and provide features that meet the needs of users.”
Zarepour said: “Currently, the network has this capability, and in the cities where optical fiber is installed, subscribers who receive optical fiber can get speeds of up to 1000 mb. But the current modem in the market may not support this feature. Therefore, producers should upgrade their products and if needed, until the domestic production reaches a point to meet this need, the needs will be met through imports.
