The head of the Food and Drug Administration considered any purchase and sale of drugs through online platforms to be unauthorized and illegal, and announced that online drug sales will be conducted under new regulations starting next year.
According to Ideaagency, Mehdi Pirsalehi, head of the Food and Drug Administration, said: “Any purchase and sale of drugs even storage through online platforms is unauthorized and illegal. After the patient registers the prescription tracking code in the platform system approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the prescription is transported through the relevant platform and delivered to the applicant’s address registered in the system.
The supply of special, quota, controlled, and special transportation conditions drugs is not carried out by online platforms, and the license for the activity of online platforms applying for activities in the field of drug transportation is issued in a joint working group by the Food and Drug Administration and the Ministry of Communications.
Regarding the reason for the changes in the provision of medicines by platforms, he said: “The main goal of these changes is to protect patients’ privacy, facilitate the process of providing pharmaceutical services, and create a balance between protecting personal information and facilitating the provision of services by the private sector.
This plan has been reviewed with the participation of all stakeholders, and its nationwide implementation starting next year will, in addition to facilitating patients’ access to medicines, also lead to greater transparency in the medicine supply chain.”
