The Minister of Communications believes that there is a need for parliamentary action to tackle the VPN mafia. Zarepour emphasizes that dealing with a mafia that exploits the people’s needs and fills its pockets requires legislation.
According to IDEA, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Issa Zarepour, stated at the government’s courtyard regarding the fight against VPNs, saying that dealing with the VPN mafia requires the determination and will of the parliament.
He believes that representatives should expedite the necessary legal framework for dealing with those who exploit the people’s needs and enrich themselves with a dual-priority bill:
“Several bills are awaiting approval by the government in the parliament, and the issue of combating the VPN mafia should be pursued by the representatives. If the parliamentarians want to address this issue systematically, they should prepare a bill, gather 50 signatures, and present it as a dual-priority bill in the open session of the parliament and pass it. This way, the necessary legal framework for dealing with those who exploit these needs of the people and enrich themselves will be established.”
Zarepour emphasized that addressing this issue (the VPNs mafia) cannot be achieved solely through technical means and requires legislation to enable enforcement in this field: “I have repeatedly mentioned that VPNs lead to insecurity in people’s phones and slow down the internet speed. It also comes with many risks, and the concerns of the representatives are justified.”
The Minister of Communications announced in August that they are striving to eradicate VPN sales. He mentioned this in the parliament:
“The business of VPN sales by individuals who exploit people’s needs is not merely technical and imposes a heavy burden on the network. It requires specific legislation, which I will present to the presiding board. I believe that, with the help of the parliamentarians, we will put an end to the business of VPN sales. As the Minister of Communications, I wish that no Iranian would need a VPN for any of their needs.”
