A disruption in the power network in certain areas of Tehran has led to the shutdown of data centers, causing some platforms and websites to become unavailable.
According to IDEA, Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, the spokesperson of the power industry, explained the incident in the Tehran power network, stating that due to a lightning strike, the protective relay at Shahid Rajaei power station acted, which caused some limited areas of Tehran to be affected for a few minutes.
Alongside the power outage, several data centers in the country faced problems due to this disruption. Afranet, Avabarid Abraaravan, Asiatech, and others were data centers that experienced high temperatures and shutdowns as a result of the power interruption.
Consequently, the shutdown of data centers naturally made the services hosted on these data centers inaccessible and unable to function.
The Recurring Problem of Power Outage
Indeed, the technical and infrastructural issues with data centers have been unprecedented in recent months. In the month of Tir, the power outage at Afranet data center caused some services to become inaccessible. Additionally, on the eleventh of Ordibehesht, due to power supply problems at the Bumehen data center, messaging apps like Eitaa, Bale, Soroush Plus, and the social network Virasty were also affected and went offline.
It seems that the challenge of power supply, which has caused problems nationwide, is a serious issue, and during the summer season, with the increasing intensity of heat, this problem has become even more critical. The lack of necessary equipment and facilities at data centers also means that during power network disruptions, data centers may remain inactive for an extended period, affecting their service delivery.
Infrastructure issues in the country’s communication sector are not solely limited to the problem of power supply and data center outages.
In some cases during last summer and even early this summer, problems such as the catching fire of telecommunication cabinets and fiber optics have caused internet disruptions in the country’s network. The latest example of such an incident was the fire in a fiber optic cabinet near Imam Khomeini Airport, which resulted in the interruption of mobile internet service in areas such as Islamshahr, Robat Karim, and others.
