According to its routine of the last few years, the website “Mashqh Nu” has recently published a report on the growth rate of Instagram users in the country and their behavior; A report that provides interesting statistics about the amount of positive and negative growth of different pages of this social network. According to this report, the number of popular Persian Instagram pages has increased despite extensive filtering. This report also says that the number of vulgar pages in this social network is decreasing.
21% growth in the number of popular pages
According to this report, which was conducted by “Abulfazl Hajizadegan”, a social researcher of “Mashqh No”, the number of popular Instagram pages has grown by 21% and reached 3212 in the past year. This is while this social network is available to the country’s users only with a filter breaker.
According to the Iran digital economy annotation, other data of this report indicate that the share of “humor and entertainment” pages has decreased to 27% in the fall of this year, continuing the previous downward trend. The share of these pages in the years 1400 and 1401 was 33 and 30 percent of the total popular Iranian Instagram pages, respectively.
“Educational” pages and “business” pages have also managed to grow and while in 2018, only 5% of popular Iranian pages published educational content on Instagram, now this number has reached 16% in the fall of 2018. Also, while in 2018, only 2% of popular Iranian Instagram pages were “business” pages, this year this number has increased to 11%.
As reported by Mashgh No, another visible change among popular Iranian Instagram pages is the emergence of “emotional” pages. These pages often represent the negative feelings of humans (such as emotional failures, loneliness, annoyance, sadness, etc.). While until two years ago, emotional pages did not have any share among the popular pages of Iranian Instagram, in the fall of 2023, these pages accounted for 2.4% of the popular pages and were ranked higher than political pages.
Tourism pages have also continued to gradually grow their share among popular Iranian Instagram pages and have reached a share of 1.2 percent this year. The continued popularity of Instagram users towards tourism pages can significantly help the country’s tourism industry.
Decreasing statistics of vulgarity
Although the “vulgarity” of online social networks has been a constant excuse to limit citizens’ access to these platforms, the findings of this research show that the share of pornographic pages (pages with adult content) is still decreasing significantly. While in 2018, 9% of popular Iranian Instagram pages published adult content, this ratio reached 1.2% in 2023.
Another interesting change in the distribution of popular Iranian Instagram pages is the gradual increase in the share of religious pages. This incident shows that Iranian Instagram is moving towards becoming more inclusive, and another point is that it seems that religious missionaries have also come to the conclusion that they cannot influence users enough by relying on official media and “native” platforms.
While between 2018 and 2018, the share of women among the managers of popular Iranian Instagram pages increased from 32% to about 42%, in the past two years, there has not been a significant change in the gender distribution of popular active Iranian Instagram pages.

The geographical distribution of popular pages, after a significant change between 1998 and 1999, has not changed significantly. Out of five active active Iranian pages on Instagram, four of them are inside Iran.

According to the graphs in this report, among the movie pages, “Navid Mohammadzadeh” and among the satirical pages, the account related to “Mojtaba Shafiee” has the most references. Among the emotional pages, the largest contribution is related to the content related to Shadmehar Aghili, and in the motivational pages, Holakui culture has the most authority. This report adds that among the sports pages, Ali Daei has the most posts.
This report also pointed out that after filtering, “Hasan Rivandi” no longer has the most popular Persian Instagram page, and this rank has reached BBC Persian.
This report shows that the filtering of the Instagram social network over the last year has not only led to a decrease in the number of audiences, but this statistic has continued to increase. This statistic can warn the officials of this field that by filtering an external platform, the conditions for the growth of internal platforms will not be provided and only monopoly will rule the market.
