The latest report of the regulatory season of the country’s communication and information technology indicators, which is related to the end of the summer of 2024, tells about the continued decrease in the penetration rate of fixed phones and the increase in the penetration rate of mobile phones, mobile internet and fixed internet. In this report, the statistics related to the development of the optical fiber network have not been updated, and the numbers of the previous report (Spring 2024) have been repeated.
According to Ideaagency, the 50th quarterly report of the Radio Communications Regulatory Organization, which is related to the indicators of the summer of this year, shows the mobile internet penetration rate of more than 136% and the fixed internet penetration rate of nearly 13%, which are far apart.
In this report, the statistics related to optical fiber coverage have not changed compared to the previous report. The Minister of Communications has recently called the calculation basis of optical fiber development a point of dispute . In the recent regulatory report, the number of households covered by optical fiber has been announced as 8 million 69 thousand 565, which is the end of spring of this year . Also, the number of covered cities is not different from previous statistics.
It is not yet clear if the new statistics are not announced due to the calculation difference or if this project has been stopped in the new government.
Low speed fixed connections
The previous government placed a lot of emphasis on the development of fixed communications, and in this regard, it started a project to develop the access of households to optical fiber; But the connection to the optical fiber network was very slow, and of course, the development of optical fiber in big cities and metropolises was less successful.
At the end of this summer, which can be considered as the same as the end of the 13th government, the penetration rate of fixed internet has not yet reached 13% and has grown by half a percent compared to the summer of last year. The number of fixed broadband subscribers has also increased by about 135,000 since the summer of last year, which is a small growth considering the efforts made.
In the same period, the number and penetration rate of landline phones has decreased, which is considered a natural trend and was also seen in the spring of this year.
A look at the type of connection of users to the fixed network also shows that there is still very little interest in optical fiber or basically this network has not yet been made available to the general public. Optical fiber market share is 4% and still xDSL technology has more than 70% market share.
Also, most subscribers use bandwidth between 2 and 20 Mbps, which is less than the bandwidth provided by optical fiber.
Mobile communications are still flowing
Unlike fixed communications, which as always failed to record significant success, mobile communications continued to grow despite all the problems and government policies, and the penetration rate of mobile phones reached more than 182%. The number of mobile phone subscribers has also exceeded 157 million, which shows that most users have more than one SIM card.
From the summer of last year to the summer of this year, more than 9 million subscribers have been added to the country’s mobile broadband network, and the penetration rate of mobile internet has increased to more than 136%, with 54% of this market owned by Hamrah-e-Avval, 43% by Irancell and 3% by It is RighTel.
Published statistics show that in contrast to the increasing trend of the number of 4G subscribers, 3G users are decreasing and constitute 5% of the total network.
In this report, unlike the previous report, there is no mention of the 5G situation.
