The head of the Data Center Committee and Content Management at the National Information Network Development Council explained the latest developments in data center expansion in the country, stating: “The capacity of these centers is set to increase to 10,000 racks by 1406 (the Iranian calendar year).”
According to IDEA, Ehsan Aryanian, the head of the Information Technology Research Center at the Information and Communication Technology Institute, discussed the current status of data centers in the country, saying: “In the comprehensive architecture plan of the National Information Network, which assigns the task of launching and establishing a minimum of three data center hubs in three provinces to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, we are actively pursuing this task. Currently, the data center hubs in Mashhad, Isfahan, and the special Pardis Technology Park have been finalized.”
He added: “At present, in the Pardis Technology Park area, 200 racks are ready and operational, and the plan is to expand and reach 1,000 racks by the end of the year.”
Aryanian continued by explaining that in each of these data center hubs, the necessary infrastructure for 1,000 racks will be prepared by the government, including water, electricity, gas, and other essential facilities.
Furthermore, Aryanian mentioned that it’s not possible to provide an exact count of data centers in the country, stating: “There is no official statistic available. The establishment of a data center has no restrictions, and anyone can create one for themselves.”
Regarding the Ministry of Communications’ plans to regulate data centers and cloud services in the country, the head of the Data Center Committee and Content Management at the National Information Network Development Council stated: “In the Data Center Committee, we have prepared a regulation proposal for the Commission for Regulation of Communications, which is set to be approved. This regulation will bring order and structure to service providers in the country in the fields of cloud services and data centers. Therefore, all data center and cloud service providers will introduce themselves and essentially obtain an identity. Ultimately, we can understand the extent of data centers in the country.”
Aryanian concluded by estimating the number of data centers in the country at the Information and Communication Technology Institute, saying: “We estimate that there are approximately 4,000 racks in the country, and we plan to increase this to 10,000 racks by 1406, considering the country’s needs and new technology requirements.
He mentioned the certification of these data centers and stated: “Private and government data centers must participate in the audit and ranking system for data centers. The Information Technology Organization has initiated this process, and it issued a call for evaluation and certification of private sector data centers based on international standards about two years ago. Approximately 12 private sector companies have undergone this process and are now ranked and certified.”
Aryanian said: “The certification process for government data centers also began a few months ago. To this end, a conference was held to clarify this matter for the government sector, and they are also required, based on Article 7 of the 1401 Budget Law, to rank and certify their data centers.”
He concluded by stating: “The information infrastructure of the expanding data centers is under development, and the communication infrastructure is another aspect that must be utilized to connect data centers. Therefore, it can be said that the information and communication infrastructures complement each other and collectively form the country’s infrastructure.
