Iran’s Proposal for Establishing an Islamic Postal Union Gains Traction
According to IDEA, Mahmoud Liaei, the CEO of the National Post Company, and Deputy Minister of Communications, attended the 4th Extraordinary Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Saudi Arabia, engaging with representatives from various countries.
During the congress’s specialized sessions, Liaei discussed the establishment of an Islamic Postal Union with delegates from certain Islamic countries, a proposal that gained significant support at the 4th Extraordinary Congress of the UPU.
Additionally, on the fourth day of the congress, Liaei met with the Head of Iraq’s Postal Service to discuss the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iraq’s postal service and the issuance of joint postage stamps between the two countries.
Furthermore, in line with Iran’s efforts to enhance its postal services and establish intelligent exchange centers, Liaei held discussions with officials from Indonesia and South Korea to learn from their experiences. He also explored the potential for Iran’s postal service to facilitate the transit of postal items to Russia, particularly given the sanctions imposed on Russia.
One notable meeting took place between Liaei and Daniel Caruso, the Head of the Australian Postal Delegation, where the focus was on utilizing Australia’s postal expertise to establish Iran’s National Intelligent Mail Exchange Center and address postal exchange challenges between the two countries. This meeting also aimed to better serve Iranian citizens living in Australia.
The 4th Extraordinary Congress of the Universal Postal Union commenced on October 1st in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and concluded on October 13th. Key topics discussed at the congress included improving environmental sustainability in the postal sector, financial matters related to the UPU, financial postal services, and amendments to UPU regulations.
