The results of the “National Social Media Culture Survey” which was conducted in May of this year with a statistical sample of 14,505 people from all over the country, show that despite filtering, Instagram is still the most popular social media in Iran.
According to Iran digital economy annotation, “Majid Soleimani Sasani”, a member of the Faculty of Tehran University and the organizer of this project, together with “Saber Jafari Kafi Abadi”, the head of the Center for National Projects, unveiled the results of this survey in a press conference at the Research Institute of Culture, Art and Communication, and they answered the questions of journalists and cyberspace researchers about this.
According to what the Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance reported, the data of this survey of May 2024 was obtained through field collection and face-to-face interviews with 14,505 people aged 15 and over living in 31 provinces of the country.
The results of the national social media culture survey show that Instagram has maintained its position as the most popular social network in Iran with 72% popularity. Telegram and WhatsApp are in the second and third places with 52 and 46 percent, respectively.
Despite the fact that many popular social media such as Tiktok and X (Twitter) are filtered in Iran, the annual report of “Yektanet” shows that at least two out of every three Internet users in Iran use a filter breaker. But due to YouTube’s filtering, 42% of people use Aparat and 25% use YouTube to watch videos.
“Dataak” report shows that despite the filtering of Instagram in Iran, more than 3 million and 700 thousand businesses are still active on it. The number of active Instagram users in the world has reached more than 2 billion people, a quarter of the world’s population. These users spend an average of 30 minutes a day on this platform.
In the National Social Media Culture Survey, 24% of the respondents said that they do not use any social media. 30% of people also follow the news through social media.
