In a recent announcement, the Minister of Communications revealed that the necessary infrastructure for merging fuel cards with bank cards is prepared and ready for implementation. However, the final decision on this matter lies with the Ministry of Petroleum.
Government Awaits Decision from Ministry of Petroleum on Full-Scale Implementation
According to IDEA, The convergence of fuel cards with national identity cards or bank cards has been under consideration by various government administrations for several years. Minister of Communications, Eisa Zarepour , stated, “Last year, a successful pilot project was executed on Kish Island, during which fuel cards were phased out and replaced with bank cards. However, the decision regarding the full-scale implementation rests with the Ministry of Petroleum. As the Minister of Communications, I can confirm that the infrastructure is fully prepared, although there may be operational challenges during execution.”
Previously, Mohammad Sadeghi, the director of the Intelligent Fuel System, had announced the development of a method for collecting fuel cards and replacing them with bank cards, stating, “By the end of July, we will be implementing this initiative at one of the stations in Tehran province.”
He remarked regarding the convergence of various cards, “Our aspiration is to consolidate all these cards. With online identity verification available, why burden individuals with multiple cards? The philosophy of the national card was to be the sole option at one point, and that still stands. However, it may not be necessary in many instances.”
Zarepour continued, “When you enter the National Government Services Portal and instantly verify your identity, you can access all services. Alternatively, with online banking, you may not need any physical cards. We should now move in this direction. At this juncture, we consider the country’s infrastructure to be ready. The discussion about the devices communicating with each other is also addressed at the Service Exchange Center. If it is not readily available for a specific service, we can pursue its implementation through legislation.
