Some young people of generation Z and the labor force do not have much motivation to work in jobs with minimum wage according to the law of the Ministry of Labor and benefit from legally approved benefits, and their preference is to work in internet jobs, which, in proportion to the time they spend on it, yield and income.
According to Iran digital economy annotation, social networks and virtual space are influential in various fields of daily life and have penetrated into the heart of people’s lives. By using these networks, people, especially the Z generation, can quickly access news and information, interact with each other in virtual space, and can get employment and income.
More than 15 years have passed since the start of internet stores and e-commerce in Iran. During these years, due to the widespread use of the Internet and its convenience and availability, online shopping has become very prosperous. With the widespread use of social networks, these platforms became a suitable platform for discovering products and buying and selling. According to the annual report of Iran’s e-commerce in 2021, the penetration rate of social networks in Iran was about 56% and 48 million users used social networks.
According to this report, 80% of e-commerce units, in addition to the website, use social networks to present their goods and services, among which Instagram has the largest share among different social networks with 84%.
Many small and home businesses, in addition to e-commerce units, use Instagram to introduce and sell their products due to its ease of use, no cost for the shop, and low cost.
Filtering is the downfall of internet businesses
In the summer of 1401, the Internet faced widespread disruption, and at the end of the summer of the same year, Instagram was completely filtered in Iran. According to the report of Lifeweb, the number of active users of Instagram decreased by 64% one month after its filtering.
According to Tekrasa research in 1400, about 415 thousand stores were active on Instagram. According to Padro’s 1401 report, in September 1401 and before Instagram filtering, this number reached 630,000 active Instagram stores. By applying filtering, the number of active stores has decreased to 220,000 in December 2022. Now, after about 9 months of filtering, there are 330 thousand active stores on Instagram. According to these statistics, the number of active stores was reduced by half.
After a few months, the return of businesses and buyers to Instagram caused the number of store orders to return to 550,000 orders per day, and their daily sales reached 137 billion Tomans in May and June 1402. Of course, considering the inflation rate of 46.5% in 2022, it can be said that the amount of sales of Instagram stores has not yet reached the time before Instagram filtering.
In addition to Instagram, other jobs such as content production, site optimization (SEO), photo and video editing, etc. are among the most popular activities among young people in cyberspace. The effect that the Internet has on people in general and virtual social networks in particular in Generation Z (the first social generation that grew up with access to the Internet and digital technology from a young age) is that they change their social actions, earning, and daily entertainment. They do it from behind their monitor and keyboard. This generation separates the economy; Culture, entertainment and history live on the screen.
