In accordance with the latest statements from the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, the Fiber Optic project, considered one of the most critical communication projects of the thirteenth government, has already signed agreements with 500 municipalities nationwide for its implementation and is rapidly being executed throughout the country.
As reported by IDEA, transparent glass, and plastic fiber optics have now become a significant part of the global telecommunications infrastructure, a key technology that had been less utilized in Iran’s fixed communications sector in previous years but has gained special attention from the thirteenth government and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
With government investment, the country’s infrastructure network has provided over 70,000 kilometers of fiber to connect various cities. However, within cities, there is still an old access network or the last connectivity layer to residential and commercial buildings, which is known as the copper network. Despite its extensive coverage, this network has limited capabilities to adapt to new technologies and provide broadband services.
With the start of the thirteenth government, numerous actions have been taken to advance this national project, and according to officials, by the end of the 8th year, 8 to 10 million households are expected to be covered by fiber optics. In this regard, Issa Zarepour, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, recently mentioned the importance of the fiber optic project for homes and businesses. He stated that this project is a government priority and the infrastructure for the country’s development in the coming decades. Through this infrastructure, it will be possible to offer multi-hundred-megabit speeds to the people.
Highlighting the importance of cooperation from municipalities for the implementation of this project, Zarepour added that agreements have already been signed with 500 municipalities across the country for the rapid implementation of this project.
In conclusion, Zarepour emphasized that with the necessary cooperation from municipalities and responsible bodies in Bushehr Province, they can complete the fiber optic project in all villages of the province and bring it to completion in the city of Bushehr by the Fajr Decade of this year.
The Fiber Optic Initiative: A Transformative Communication Project in Iran
On the other hand, not long ago, Nik Mohammad Baloch Zehi, the Director-General of Communications and Information Technology in Sistan and Baluchestan Province announced the operation of more than 123 communication projects across the province in honor of Government Week. He stated that due to the measures taken by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, we are witnessing a reduction in the digital divide between cities and rural areas in this province. As a result, people in even the remotest parts of this province are now connected to the National Information Network and high-speed internet.
According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the construction of 46 new telecommunications sites and the upgrade of 68 existing sites to 3G/4G are among the measures taken by the Provincial Office of Communications and Information Technology in Sistan and Baluchestan from the beginning of the Fajr Decade of 1401 (2022) until now. This has led to the connection of 206 villages in this province, with a population of over 13,264 rural households, to the National Information Network.
He also mentioned that, in line with communication sustainability, technology upgrading, and the development of equipment between communication sites and telecommunications centers, more than 624 kilometers of ground optical fiber has been implemented in the cities of Taftan, Chabahar, Dashtiar, Qasr-e Qand, Saravan, Sarbaz, Sib o Suren, Mirjaveh, and Nikshahr for the benefit of 298 localities.
It should be noted that out of the 1,400 cities, both large and small, across the country, 1,200 cities have had their operator and fate determined, and new licenses have been recently granted to communication operators to provide communication and fiber optic services, aside from the Telecommunication Company of Iran (TCI). Therefore, in 1,200 cities, seven operators are providing services.
As a result, one additional operator has been designated for each city, and plans are in place to achieve 40% progress in this project, covering eight million households, by the end of this year, which will provide high-speed services to the people.
