The Financial Times has recently devoted a report to this issue to discuss the story of thousands of citizens who have been victims of this scam.
The Financial Times has started its article with the fact that the interest of Iranians in acquiring the popular Apple mobile phone has become the basis of this multi-million dollar fraud. This publication explains how Kourosh company had been selling half-price iPhones for several months, claiming to eliminate middlemen.
It is stated in this report that Kourosh Company managed by “Amirhossein Sharifian” was able to make thousands of people, many of them young people, victims of his fraud through the advertisements he did through famous figures, including athletes and other famous people.
However, when more buyers paid for iPhones to the company and waited for the delivery of the Apple gadget, they never received a device. In the end, it turned out that this scheme was a fraud.
Kourosh Company’s 35 million dollar fraud narrative in the Financial Times
The Financial Times, quoting domestic media, said the fraud was apparently worth around $35 million, but no official figure has yet been released. In addition, it is mentioned in the report of this media that only after the complainants went to the police, it was found out that Sharifian had left Iran a few months ago.
Apparently, the police are aware of the situation of this 27-year-old manager, but they have not announced anything about it, and they are going to return him to Iran through the international police. The Financial Times further stated that it was unable to speak with Sharifian, but he claimed in a recent interview on YouTube that he owed only $2.7 million to Cyrus Company’s clients.
This media has also mentioned the issue of unofficial arrival of iPhones in Iran and reminded the lack of commercial relations between Apple and the country. In part of the text of this article, according to Tasnim news agency, it has been announced that during the last 10 months, about 1 billion dollars worth of iPhones came to Iran from Middle Eastern and Asian countries.
The Financial Times also wrote about the popularity of the iPhone, especially among young people. This media spoke to a 28-year-old named Farzad, who said: “[iPhone] is attractive and classy. My friends are cutting back to save money for an iPhone. However, getting an Apple ID or downloading apps and games is still a hassle and a lot of money.”
The Financial Times has also mentioned the issue of banning the entry of the new generation of iPhones into Iran. This media, quoting analysts, says that there are various reasons – from the existence of satellite communication to the lack of currency in the discussion of banning the import of this gadget. The discussion of mutual sanctions on Iranian and American goods has also been mentioned.
Next, this article talks about the celebrities who have done advertisements for Kourosh Company and mentions people like “Alireza Biranvand”, the goalkeeper of Persepolis club, as one of these figures. In another part of this article, the words of “Jalal Rashidi Kochi”, a member of the Islamic Council, are mentioned about the main culprit of Kourosh Company’s fraud. According to Rashidi Kochi, the government has been the main cause of such a problem with its wrong decisions.
At the end of the Financial Times article, Farzad says: “I wonder how [this company] operated for months under the supervision of all relevant organizations. I keep thinking why Iranians can’t easily make their purchases from their neighborhood Apple Store like in other parts of the world.
