The statistics from the Central Bank indicate that the share of the information and communications sector in the country’s economy has been decreasing in recent years, declining from 1.1 percent in 1399 (2020) to 0.9 percent in 1400 (2021) and 0.7 percent in 1401 (2022). Despite the continued growth in this sector, the growth rate has been decreasing.
As reported by IDEA, according to the Central Bank’s report on developments in the real sector of Iran’s economy, the information and communications sector grew by 10.1 percent in 1401. The growth rate was 11.1 percent in the spring season but decreased in the summer and autumn seasons, reaching 6.9 percent and 6.8 percent, respectively. This growth in 1400 represents a 13.1 percent increase, and in the year before, which was 1399, the communications sector had a growth rate of 34.1 percent, which can be attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite looking at other sectors contributing to economic growth, the information and communications sector had the highest growth rate in the past year after the ‘accommodation and food services sector, with a growth rate of 22.8 percent.
However, the share of this sector in total economic growth has decreased. While in 1400 (2021), 0.4 percent of economic growth was attributed to the communications sector, this figure was 0.5 percent the previous year. In 1400, the real GDP growth was 4.4 percent, but the year before, it was 4 percent.
The real value of this sector in the economy in 1401, at constant prices of 1395, was 68,362 billion Tomans, while in 1400, it was 62,208 billion Tomans.
All of this has happened as the share of the communications sector in the total GDP has decreased, from 0.9 percent in 1400 to 0.7 percent in 1401. The trend in this indicator shows a downward trend in recent years, with the communications sector’s share of GDP being 1.1 percent in 1399 (2020).
